Description: Major James Spittall, a commander of the Douglas Rifle Volunteer Corps. He retired Jan 26th 1889, and died May 31st 1914 aged 89. He died at his home, Laureston, in Douglas. He was the oldest member of the Manx Bar, having entered in 1847, and for many years was clerk to the justices. He represented Douglas in the House of Keys until 1891 and was reckoned to be one of the richest men in the Island. In this portrait he wears a scarlet tunic with white buckskin crossbelt and waistbelt. He is also wearing the Volunteer Decoration, awarded for long service with the Volunteer Force, firstly with the Douglas Volunteers and latterly the 7th Volunteer battalion King's Liverpool Regiment.
