Venetian scene

Date made: 1944

Description: Framed and glazed watercolour of a Venetian scene, view from the Lagoon into St Mark's Square with the Doge's Palace on the right and the Campanile bell tower on the left. Gondolas in foreground. Signed in bottom right corner.

Painted at the Peveril Internment Camp by an Italian internee named Almoro Morosini for donor's mother who was a Manx nurse working in the internment camps. She married an Italian from The Metropole Camp after the war.

The HO396 series of records shows Almaro [sic] Carlo Morosini born 4.9.1895 in Colle Umberto, held at the Palace Camp. In 1941 it was noted that he did not wish to be released, and one card is noted '1945' indicating that he was still held at the end of the war. He appears on the 1939 Register at 9 Earnshaw Street Holborn, which appears to be a tenement, occupation shown as 'Canvas Artist'.
