Ship in a light bulb
Date made: 1934
Description: Light bulb with wooden ship, passenger vessel with one funnel (IoMSPCo ?) lighthouse and buildings on land behind. The date (1934) is handpainted on the back of the bulb. Sits on wooden (varnished mahogany) stand.
This tiny ship in a light bulb (one of a pair) was made by Philip Faragher. He was the Master of the SS Speke, which sank on 28 September 1943 with the loss of all nine crew, which included two further Manxmen George Hudson and Charles Eastwood. In peacetime Philip Faragher was the skipper of the Isle of Man Harbour Board Dredger, but had been allocated to the SS Speke through the wartime merchant sailors' pool. The ship was lost in a gale but the Commonwealth War Graves Commission regarded Philip and the crew of the SS Speke as war casualties. Philip’s daughter donated the ship in a bottle to the Manx Museum.
