Gateway to Harbour House at Port Grenaugh, Santon, 1920-1940
Date made: 1920-1949
Artist: Whaley, Harold
Description: A heavily textured oil painting depicting a Manx cottage on a bright spring day. Little is known about Harold Whaley’s (1896-1976) early life, but he appears to have painted prolifically on the Isle of Man. He specialised in Manx landscape oil paintings and etchings which captured rural life. His artistic style is very similar to William Hoggatt’s, they were good friends and are known to have painted together on the Island. Several of Whaley’s paintings were exhibited at the Manx Museum in 1931-2 at an exhibition of work by local artists. The Journal of the Manx Museum noted that 'For composition and for variety of accomplishment, the most enjoyable works are those by Mr Harold Whaley...with a freshness, spontaneity and vigour, and of original but unforced design.'
