Manx Boats

Date made: 1896

Artist: Holden, J.

Description: Large ornate gilt framed and glazed painting of Manx fishing boats at sea.

A calm sea view with a low moon shining upon fishing boats in Peel Bay, with Peel Castle and breakwater in the background. Peel fishing boat number PL196 can be seen in the foreground. The scene shows a misty and pale moonset.

Very little is known about late Victorian artist John Holden. We have a number of his works in the collection, which all depict tranquil fishing and sea scenes. The large scale of the painting and the gentle composition suggest it was commissioned to hang on the wall of a large hotel or boarding house on the Isle of Man.
