Greeba Gold Ring
Date made: Viking
Description: Found by metal detector user Rob Middleton, one of three Viking Age gold finds from the west. Dating to around AD 1000, they are thought to be the remains of a goldsmiths hoard. The decoration is incredibly intricate, but this piece was probably destined to be melted down as scrap.
Carved gold ring fragment from Greeba found in January 2002.
It is cast, and bears a raised design depicting a dragon-like beast.
It was declared 'Treasure Trove'.
Similar rings are known from Viking hoards from the Western and Northern Isles of Scotland, but such a find is rare on the Island.
