Bronze head and shoulders of a child
Date made: 1893
Artist: Taubman, Frank Mowbray
Description: Executed in 1893, this bronze head of a child wearing a hood or cowl is the work of artist Frank Mowbray Taubman (1868-1946). Of Manx parentage, Taubman spent much of his working life in London. An intriguing aspect of this piece is the inclusion of a Masonic square and compass. The work dates from his early artistic period, when he studied in Paris and then in Brussels at the École des Beaux-Arts. He was awarded a gold medal in two separate categories for his sculptures (1894) and was made a member of the Royal Academy in 1897.
