Cotton Random/ 'Tailor's' Quilt

Date made: early 20th century

Maker: Member of Corkill Family

Description: Patchwork quilt made with dress pieces and shirting.

The quilt is made of cottons and very fine woven fabrics. It has a border of red patchwork (red and green floral pattern on a white background) on two sides, and of blue patterned cottons on the other. The quilt has been repaired and patched giving the impression that the borders are unfinished. It contains a random arrangement of rectangles in the centre of the patchwork top. The quilt is mainly red, white, pale blue and pink.

The quilt is backed with heavily patched white cotton sheeting. It is machine-quilted in straight lines using white cotton thread and does not contain any wadding.

The quilt was made by Mrs Corkhill of Agneash between 1910 and 1920 and was given to the donor by Mrs Corkhill's daughter.
