Quayle punch bowl

Date made: c.1840

Description: White porcelain punch bowl with gold decoration & lettering. Lettering worn in places. Lettering states 'Presented to Captain Thomas Quayle, commanding the George of Peel, by his affectionated friends Petersen & Andersen.'

Believed to be of French manufacture, this bowl was presented to Captain Quayle by two shipwrecked sailors whom he had saved.

The 'George' was built in Peel in 1846. She was smack rigged and clinker built. Her 10 share holders all came from Peel. The rescue incident occurred in the North Sea when returning from the Baltic, the 'George' encountered a Norwegian ship in distress in a storm.
