A Scottish portrait and genre painter, the second son of Robert Herdman Sr. who was also a member of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA). He studied art in Paris at the Royal Scottish Academy schools while visiting Spain and Holland. He exhibited in many galleries, including those in London from 1888 as well as those in Paris, Munich, Vienna and Scotland. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1908 and went on to live in Edinburgh for many years.
