Whilst it never reached the same level of industrialisation found in Yorkshire, the production of woollen textiles was part of the Manx economy for a number of years. The farming of sheep and production of wool can be traced at least as far back as Viking times. In the 19th century, the two most important commercial sites for wool production were at Laxey and St Johns. In the 1950s Tynwald Mills operated as Moore's Mill, and the industry enjoyed a brief resurgence around this time with the creation of the Manx tartan.
