The clipper ship James Crossfield was en route from Calcutta to Liverpool when it was wrecked on Langness, the first indication being bales of cotton washed ashore. Of the crew of thirty and two passengers, there were no survivors. In the days that followed nearly 100 men were engaged in saving the valuable cargo. The wreck led to renewed calls from mariners for a light to be installed on Langness, the site of many wrecks.
