Officer's shako of the 23rd Light Dragoons belonging to Caesar Bacon

Date made: c.1816

Description: Black leather Shako of the 1812 pattern, white and red plume to front. Circular device to front with battle honours 'Peninsula' and 'Waterloo' together with numeral XXIII. Polished steel (?) chinscales. This item belonged to Caesar Bacon, and there is evidence to suggest that he wore it at the Battle of Waterloo. The central insignia has been removed and replaced at some stage, probably around 1816 to incorporate the Waterloo battle honour.
