Nothing To Give But My Son
Date made: 1941
Artist: Miller, Harold 'Dusty'
Description: Satirical cartoon drawn for Isle of Man Times newspaper. This cartoon appeared on 22 March 1941, and shows a British soldier calling at the door to collect money for the war effort. The Manxman offers him a young child, whilst hidden behind a flag are bags of money. It suggests that the Manx people would rather lose men in war than contribute money.
This cartoon relates to a heated debate in the Keys, reported in that weeks's newspaper, in which one member, Lieutenant Fargher hit out at the derisory amount that Tynwald had voted towards the war costs. He claimed that a certain section of the Island's population was extremely wealthy, and was protecting its wealth by introducing indirect taxation, so the poor shouldered the burden of the cost of the war.
