Before We Fall Out

Date made: 1939

Artist: Miller, Harold 'Dusty'

Description: Satirical cartoon drawn for Isle of Man Times newspaper. Soldier tells politician to Fall In, 'before we fall out'.

This cartoon appeared on 29 April 1939. At the time the expansion of the Territorial Army was underway, with urgent appeals for young men to join the army. "Fall in Before We Fall Out" was the slogan used in the the month of April for the recruiting drive then under way. Following the Munich crisis the previous year it was now apparent that another war was only a matter of time. The same newspaper also carried an interesting letter on the Spanish Civil War, which commented that Britain's front line had been in Spain, and commenting that fascism which had been held at the gates of Madrid, was now on the march.
