Goblin Teas-Made machine from the Belvedere Hotel
Date made: 1960
Description: This Goblin Teasmade came from the Belvedere Hotel in Douglas, run by Mr and Mrs Martin, which finally closed in 1988. The machine, which combines a time operated kettle and teapot, could be set to produce tea at a particular time in the morning. Machines such as this were considered the height of sophistication in the 1960s and 70s but have all but vanished now.
Made by the well known firm of Goblin, the teasmade consists of an integral kettle, clock and a lamp with a shade.
The presence of a machine such as this in its rooms indicates the need for hoteliers to constantly upgrade their facilities. From the late 19th century onwards, advertisements for the Douglas promenade hotels frequently refer to the recent installation of new gas or later electric lighting, the provision of hot and cold running water in all bedrooms or even the laying of a new sprung dance floor for the increased enjoyment of their visitors! Manx tourism declined though with the advent of cheap foreign package holidays in the 1960s and by the 1990s various parts of the Douglas promenade were redeveloped for new office and apartment developments, including the Belvedere Hotel.
