Net needle
Description: Jeebyn Needle for Net making from Port St Mary.
The traditional hand made jeebin had been a sixteenth part of a piece of net. A jeebin was 18 yards long and 52 meshes deep. Four lengths of jeebin and four depths were joined together to form the piece of net 72 yards long 208 meshes deep.
Port St Mary was a busy fishing port during the height fof the Manx fishing industry. Net making was an important employment in the Isle of Man and in the winter men would be employed in net lofts to mend the nets.
