Internee shopping bag
Date made: 1940-1944
Description: A grey and yellow string bag with wooden handles. Striped design on string bag and carved wooden handles.
Made by Mr Domenico Traversari, the donor's father, an Italian civilian internee held on the Isle of Man during the Second World War. He was interned in the Palace Camp, Douglas (R Camp - 62192) also O Camp, House no.26. Interned from June 1941 to at least January 1944, released June 1944.
The Isle of Man played an important role as a centre for internment of Germans, Austrians and Italians in the Second World War. Italian-made craftwork is more common than German. The Italians, as predominantly economic rather than political migrants to Britain, found it harder to demonstrate anti-fascist credentials. Thus they tended to be held on the Island for longer than the Germans.
