Internee-made bag with Second World War propaganda slogan designs
Date made: 1940-1944
Description: A green hessian bag with embroidered wartime designs and felt appliqued designs, hook and eye fastenings.
Said to have been made by internees for donor's (Miss Mary White) mother as a thank-you present for teaching the internee children from Rushen Internment Camp at the school on Ballafesson Road. Donor's mother was Miss. E.H. Waite.
An appliqued bag, Internee Made. Hessian (from a sandbag?) lined with red and white check cotton gingham.
Front - a sailor BRITANNIA RULES THE WAVES, a red cross box A PENNY A WEEK, 3 carrots, CARROTS...ATS EYES fire in hearth KEeP THEM BURNING, parachutist THE PILOT IS SAFE aeroplane WINGS...NAVY a signpost.
On the side of the bag - a heart VALENTINE RI..SIA, a torch GOT YOUR GAS MASK? /GOT YOUR TORCHLIIGHT?
On the back of the bag - face with monocle LORD HAWHAW CALLING/ITS THAT/NAST/MAN/AGAIN, 3 battle ships THE CONVOY MUST GO THROUGH, rubbish SALVAGE CAMPAIGN/TIN/PAPER/RUBBER/BONES/WAST NOT - WANT NOT.
