Afternoon dress
Date made: 1960s
Description: Purple and cream, 1960s afternoon dress. Purple organza material with large, cream printed roses. Scoop neckline with long, sash-tie detail, which hangs down the front of the dress. Wide, pleated skirt, gathered at waist with pleated underskirt. Side-zip fastening. Good condition, slight discolouration to lining and repair made to a small hole in the skirt.
This dress was worn by Manx MHK, Mrs Betty Hanson at Government House Garden Parties. Mrs Hanson joined the Board of Education as a non-Tynwald member, serving from 1971-1974. She was elected to the House of Keys in 1974. She went on to chair the Board of Education between 1976 and 1981. Mrs Hanson became the first female member of the Legislative Council in 1982.
Part of the Daphne Corlett Collection. Born in 1919, Daphne was a collector of historic costumes. She collected over 300 costumes dating from the 1700s onwards and gave talks and fashion shows, sometimes lending items for theatrical productions.
