Horn snuff box

Date made: early 19th century

Description: Horn Snuff Box with T.C. initial.

This object appears in the Museum Trustees' report of 16 April 1931. The donor there is shown as Miss Cowley, the Church, Patrick. The C on the snuff box probably stands for Cowley (a forebear?)

The 1911 census has a Miss Kate Cowley living at The Church, Patrick, with her widowed mother Ann Cowley and her uncle John Shimmin. On the 1891 Census she appears as Catherine Cowley, living at Raby, Patrick. Her parents James Cowley and Ann Shimmin married in 1871, and the groom's father is shown on the marriage record as Thomas Cowley, a mariner. Possibly the snuff box was his.

The 1861 Census shows a Thomas Cowley, agricultural labourer, with son James living at Raby, Patrick, possibly the same man. He was born c.1808.
