St Patrick's Isle Pagan Lady Burial Shears

Date made: Viking: 800-1265

Description: Complete (but very mineralised) pair of shears. The remains of a comb (1984-0016/024a) are stuck to the blades through corrosion.

The bow of the shears is looped, with straight blade backs curving slightly in at the tip.

The shears and comb were found beside the right lower thigh of the skeleton, near a possible pestle and mortar (1984-0016/25a and 25b). The shears and comb may originally have been suspended from the waist, as traces of textile suggesting a possible suspension loop were identified.
