Ship fragment from the vessel 'City of Glasgow'
Date made: early 19th century
Description: Fragment of painted timber, possibly cut from a locker lid or similar, from wrecked Steam Packet Vessel 'City of Glasgow.' After suffering engine failure on 20 October 1825 the ship was driven onto the Conister Rock, becoming a total wreck.In this incident the humane and intrepid conduct of Sir William Hillary was especially noted, and an award of 25 sovereigns was made to the boatmen involved in the rescue.
Sir William Hillary (b.1771-d.1847) was the Founder of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in 1824.
