Working model of a barrel organ
Date made: c.1820
Description: Musical instrument. This Barrel Organ is driven by a clockwork mechanism, complete with a pendulum and chain (similar to grandfather clock). Although there is no casework, the instrument is complete, with bellows, pipes and all equipment present . It dates to about 1820 and was made by Philip Kelly, Conchan. (Onchan, Isle of Man).
A Philip Kelly, Carpenter, appears on the 1841 Census living at Spittall Court, Douglas (Parish of Onchan) aged 35. This is possibly the maker but if so would suggest that the date of the object is slightly later.
