Viking helmet worn by George Cowley of Peel

Date made: mid 20th century

Maker: unknown

Description: This helmet was worn by George Cowley, a founder member of the Peel Vikings and one of the first trustees of that organisation. He was one of the organisers of the Peel Viking Festivals of the 1960s and 1970s. He would have worn it whilst taking part in mock Viking landings on Peel beach. George was elected the 'King of Man' during the 1978 Peel Viking Festival.

The helmet is a replica of the stereotypical style of helmet once thought to be worn by Viking warriors. It has a steel dome with two projecting cows' horns.

There is a long tradition of Viking re-enactment in Peel. Similar events took place in the 1930s, before Cowley revived them in the postwar years. The event fell into abeyance before being revived once more in the early 21st century. As well as being a draw for summer visitors, the re-enactments reflect the fact that the island's Viking heritage is considered by many to be strongest in the west.
