Snuff Box once belonging to Lieutenant Governor Smelt

Description: Snuff box of silver-gilt. date made 1793. Belonged to Lieutenant Governor Cornelius Smelt.
Cornelius Smelt was Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man from 1805 until his death from Cholera in 1832. He was highly popular with the Manx, and upon his death the Smelt memorial was erected in Castletown, the only such monument to a Lieutenant Governor.
The donor's father-in-law, Sir James Gell, records: 'Leutenant-Governor Smelt shortly before his death (1832) presented this snuff-box, which had been that used by him, to J. McHutchin, Esq., Clerk of the Rolls.
