Alms chest
Date made: Late 15th or early 16th century
Description: Carved oak alms chest, 'Gothic' style front panel. Lid soft wood, probably later date. Belonged for many years past to the Brook family of Druidale (Lezayre) but original provenance unknown. Mr H. Brooke of Lezayre Lodge remembers this at Ballakelly, Andreas and thinks it may have come from Jurby Church. This chest may be earlier in date, but it includes a particular way of producing the ends of chests which continued until the 16th century. The lower cross rails are missing on the left end. It has one iron carrying handle which may be original.
An alms box is a strong chest or box often fastened to the wall of a church to receive offerings for the poor.
