fork & knife, inscribed box

Date made: early 19th century

Description: Box containing small, silver-plated knife and fork. The box bears a strip of leather inscribed in gold-letters thus: A BIRTHDAY PRESENT, TO PHILIP MOORE, FROM Mrs FARRANT 21st JANUARY 1834 COMPLETING HIS 3D YEAR. (Philip St.Andrew Moore, grandson of Sir George Moore of Ballamoore, Patrick, Married Eleanor Shimmin of Ballacross, near Peel, great aunt of the donor).

Philip St. Andrew Moore died 8 July 1868 from injuries received on board the barque Nightingale during a heavy storm whilst lying in the Buller roadstead, New Zealand.
