Woollen Wholecloth Quilt

Date made: 1830-1835

Description: A woollen wholecloth quilt with a plain top of faded red linsey-woolsey fabric. The red wholecloth is made of several, irregular pieces sewn together as bands. The quilt is backed with a plain unbleached flannel cloth.

The quilt is elaborately hand-quilted with interlacing circles overlaying a diamond trellis pattern. It has been suggested that the circles were derived by drawing around plates. The quilt is hand-stitched with beige woollen thread and filled with several layers of fabric (possibly old blankets) and fleece.

The quilt was made about 1830-1835 for William Cubbon's grandmother at Ardary, Kirk Arbory. William Cubbon was the second Director of the Manx Museum.
