The Kella Mill, Sulby
Date made: 1903
Artist: Knox, Archibald
Description: A watercolour view by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of the whitewashed buildings at the Kella Mill at Sulby. Unlike most of his watercolour paintings which are untitled and unidentified views of the Manx landscape, Knox has written a title and date on the painting in his distinctive and intricate script 'KELLYA, VIII. 03'. For most of his working life, Knox worked both as an art teacher and as a designer, but from c.1900-1904 he lived in a cottage in Sulby on the Isle of Man and produced many of his world famous metalwork designs for Liberty & Co. of London, for which he is most well-known.

This mill was a working mill when I was brought up at Kella Farm, in Sulby, down the road, and my grandparents lived opposite it for a while. - Nigel Radcliffe Report this
