Bright Field and Dark Trees
Date made: c.1900-1933
Artist: Knox, Archibald
Description: A warm and golden watercolour landscape by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) depicting a line of trees against a sky and landscape that have been painted in solid blocks of colour. Knox's watercolour sketches can be seen as exercises in capturing the light and a single moment in time and this is shown in the 'bright field and dark trees' of the title given to the painting by the Manx Museum. The artist is said to have painted his watercolour scenes in a few hours or less, but that he would also sit for hours waiting for the exact light and cloud formations that he wanted to paint.
