Cronk Sumark, Sulby
Date made: 1747-1819
Artist: Griffith, Moses
Description: “A curious fantastically shaped hill, called Cronk-y-Shammock, or the hill of primroses. This hill is a favourite picnic resort of the neighbourhood. This is no doubt a very early specimen of a hill fort.” (Dr Robert Paterson, Manx Antiquities, 1863, M 02321)
Moses Griffith (1749-1819) was a Welsh draughtsman, engraver and water colourist. In 1769 he entered the service of Thomas Pennant of Downing, Flintshire (antiquary and natural historian). Griffiths provided illustrations to most of Pennant's books. In 1774 Griffith made a tour of the Isle of Man with Thomas Pennant and Captain Francis Grose (antiquary and topographical draughtsman).
