Description: "Monks [of Rushen Abbey] were of the Cistercian order, and the institution was long the most distinguished in the Island. It flourished for some time after the suppression of religious houses in England, but now its order has been long banished, and its very self has passed away." Sir Henry Dryden, known as ‘the Antiquary,’ was an archaeologist who travelled throughout Britain and Europe in the nineteenth century. During his travels Dryden recorded buildings, historic sites and monuments, producing thousands of architectural and archaeological drawings. He visited the Isle of Man in 1853 and sketched several landmarks.
