Rockingham-ware jug presented to Captain Richard Rowe
Date made: 1854
Maker: Rockingham
Description: Little is known of the origins of this Rockingham-ware jug, except that it was presented to the Captain of the Great Laxey Mine, Richard Rowe, by the directors of the company upon the opening of the Great Laxey Wheel in 1854.
Decorated with green and gold glaze, the jug features a depiction of the wheel.
Rowe was a Cornishman, appointed mine manager (or 'Captain') because of his expertise in hard rock mining. The Great Laxey Wheel is the Isle of Man's greatest piece of industrial architecture. Its construction, to pump water out of the Laxey Mine, was a significant investment by the mining company and ensured the profitability of the mine for a generation.
