Description: Ballachurry Farm, Rushen by William Hoggatt. The watercolour provides a relatively stark and austere view of farm buildings. Rather than paint the usual front of the farmhouse, Hoggatt depicts the private working area of the farm. He has not tried to produce a pretty farm picture but an honest and realistic impression of a working farm.
Ballachurry farm is in the parish of Rushen at the end of the road from Colby where it divides into the roads to Port Erin and Surby. In common with most of his favourite locations, the scene was within easy walking distance of Hoggatt’s home on the outskirts of Port Erin.
Ballachurry farm was a particular favourite of Hoggatt's. He painted it repeatedly over several years from a variety of angles and from dawn to dusk. On one occasion at dawn he frightened a farm worker who discovered him walking around the orchard trying to decide on which view to paint. The apparently deserted 'Ballachurry, Rushen', with only the turkey and hens for company, is likely to have been painted at the start or close of the day, comnfirmed by the long shadows that dapple the yard.
