Woollen Framed Medallion Quilt
Date made: late 19th century
Maker: Member of Mylroie Family
Place made: Laxey
Description: Geometric patchwork quilt.
The quilt has a central panel of nine red and blue checked squares surrounded by largely plain rectangles. Predominantly blue, brown and purple with red highlights, materials used include hand-woven woollen fabrics, tweeds, silks and cottons. The quilt is backed with a dark blue linsey-woolsey fabric in three strips. The quilt is in poor condition, with some patches of the top fabric almost completely worn away.
It is hand-quilted with a green or grey cotton thread in a zig-zag pattern. There is no filling.
This patchwork quilt is thought to have been made using tailors' remnants, possibly by a member of the family who donated the quilt to the Manx Museum, Messrs Mylroie of Laxey, who were tailors. The quilt was used as a black-out curtain during the Second World War.
