Round Tower and Armoury, Peel Castle
Date made: 1837
Description: "No admittance to [Peel] Castle can be gained without ‘Old Tom’…upon all these reliques of antiquities ‘Old Tom’ dwelt with a precision that savoured of former military habits, and a prolixity, much increased by the too liberal aid of whiskey; and upon every point of authority, he quoted Sir Walter Scott, as if neither before nor since, there had ever existed another historian." (Sir George Head, A Home Tour through Various Parts of the United Kingdom, 1837, M 02445)
Painting by R.H. Froude, father of the historian James Anthony Froude (1818-1894) & Richard Hurrell Frowde divine (1803-1836).
