Hexagon Quilt

Date made: c.1850

Description: A hand-sewn English-style pieced patchwork quilt made of 4 cm hexagons. The large hexagons consist of six dark or light hexagons with a contrasting coloured hexagon in the centre. This pattern is known as 'Grandmother's Garden'. Fabrics include stripes, florals, sprig patterns, checks, spots and geometric patterns. The quilt is multicoloured with pinks, blues, browns, yellows, purples and sprigs of green. The original quilt border was made of a pink and blue floral fabric. The quilt is in poor condition with only the patchwork top surviving in four sections.

Sections of the patchwork quilt were made by the Mrs Harold Brooke around 1850. She was the grandmother of Mrs Lees, Ramsey, who donated the quilt to the Manx Museum.
