Schooner 'Vixen' entering Leghorn in 1863 under the command of John Sansbury
Date made: 1863
Artist: unknown artist
Description: Oil painting of the schooner 'Vixen' entering Leghorn, Italy in 1863 under the command of John Sansbury.
Vixen was built in Peel at the part owner Henry Graves’s quay near to the Leece museum, under the direction of Mr. Cannon the foreman. It cost £2,000 and was christened in August 1851. Although not a large vessel it sailed very fast, and was easily handled by a small crew. The Vixen travelled all over the world.
It is thought that her commande, John Sansbury, left his children on the island completely un-provided for when he set off on the ship.
