Cross Monument outside Kirk Maughold

Date made: 15 September 1815

Description: "The market cross of St Maughold [opposite the church gate]…has a somewhat unique appearance, and is the only thing of the kind to be seen on the Island. The age of the present cross cannot be anterior to 1270." (Dr Robert Paterson, Manx Antiquities, M 02321)

On the sketch is written: "Memorandum sketch of an ancient stone cross opposite the entrance into Kirk Maughold Churchyard, Isle of Man." (Will Latham, 15 September 1815)

Sketch by Captain William Latham of Liverpool. In July 1815 Captain William Latham made a tour of the Isle of Man with Mr William Gerard Walmesley Esq of Liverpool, Mr James Leigh of Liverpool and Mr Ralph Greenough of Wigan. Latham made many sketches of the Island during his visit.
