Bay of Douglas

Description: “Bordering on the shore stands highly preeminent the stately and magnificent Castle of Mona, the summer residence of His Grace most noble John Murray Duke of Athol, Pitular Lord or King of the Isles. Near to this is Mount Stewart belonging to Colonel Stewart and a seat of Mr Heaps which we admired for its neatness and simplicity.” (Samuel Dukinfield Swarbreck, Tour through the Isle of Man by Captain William Latham, July 1815, M 07398)
On the sketch is written: "Sketch of the Bay of the Town of Douglas, Mona Castle the residence of the Duke of Athol with Douglas Bank's Howe Head. The Town of Douglas Bearing West by Compass about 1 League. Taken from on board the cutter Westwood. Will Latham, c.1815."
Sketch by Captain William Latham of Liverpool. In July 1815 Captain William Latham made a tour of the Isle of Man with Mr William Gerard Walmesley Esq of Liverpool, Mr James Leigh of Liverpool and Mr Ralph Greenough of Wigan. Latham made many sketches of the Island during his visit.
