Melodeon

Date made: early 19th century

Description: Musical instrument. This melodeon is made of painted wood, with mother of pearl keys (some broken) and was owned by Mr John Clark of Ballavolley, Ballaugh, in the early 1800s.

Also spelled Melodium and sometimes called a Reed Organ, or American Organ, a melodeon is keyboard instrument sounded by the vibration of free reeds by wind.

I was delighted to see this melodeon on your website, as I am a descendent of John Clark of Ballavolley, who died in 1838. Isabella Clark, Hall Caine's grandmother, was brought up in his household. - John Michael Clark Report this
