Description: Portrait in oils of George B. Cowen in Loyal Manx Volunteer Corps uniform, painted over a photograph, the paper of which has been mounted onto a stretched artists canvas. Signed on back of canvas 'George B. Cowen (1917) L.M.V.C.' 13 1/2 inch x 11 1/2 inch.
The Loyal Manx Volunteers were a home defence force raised during the First World War. Part of their duties including providing additional guards to internment camps. George Bellett Cowen appears on the 1911 Census as a Photographic Artist, aged 46, living at 10 Albion Terrace, Ramsey.
