The River Mouth

Date made: c.1900-1933

Artist: Knox, Archibald

Description: A relatively minimalist but atmospheric watercolour by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) depicting the mouth of a river as it slowly meanders into the sea. The painting appears to be an attempt to capture a panoramic view of the Island's coast looking out to sea. Although most of his watercolour sketches are untitled and unidentified views of the Manx landscape, it is thought that this painting depicts the Lhen Trench on the north west coast of the Island. Knox's watercolour sketches can be seen as exercises in capturing the light and a single moment in time.
