Medal awarded by the Manchester Manx Society to the crew of the 'Wanderer' for the 'Lusitania' rescue
Date made: 1915
Place made: Peel
Description: On 7 May 1915 the Cunard liner Lusitania was returning to Liverpool from New York, when she was torpedoed off the Old Head of Kinsale by a U-boat. The incident was to have long term repercussions as many of the passengers were American, and the incident inflamed anti-German opinion in the as yet still neutral United States. The first rescue vessel on the scene was the 20-ton Peel fishing boat 'Wanderer'. The crew rescued as many survivors from the water as they could, and there was considerable pride felt in the Isle of Man over this incident. The Manchester Manx Society had a special medal struck for each member of the crew, which were presented at Tynwald Day 1915. This example was awarded to Thomas Woods.
