Castle Rushen, Castletown, Isle of Man
Date made: 29 September 1857
Artist: Staples, S.
Description: "Castletown is the metropolis of the Island, and the place where most of the persons of any note choose to have their residence, because the Governor keeps his court in it; the Castle is a fine ancient building and has been honoured with the presence of several of the Lords of Man; the late Earl of Derby continued there some time, but his present Lordship (a.1726) has never yet vouchsafed to visit it." (George Waldron, The History and Description of the Isle of Man, 1726, M 00733)
