Knockaloe Internment Camp wooden cigarette box

Description: A handmade wooden cigarette box made in Knockaloe Camp. The cigarette box was made in two parts and automatically dispenses cigarettes when the top part is lifted. The box is comprised of a wooden base, cigarette holder and a decorated rectangular wooden cover. The decorative cover has inlaid banding on the top with a series of decorative panels on each of the sides. The front panel has a marquetry design of a shield with the initials 'J.W.C.'. The design on the back of the box is the Union flag. The sides are decorated with two other handcoloured flags.
Size: 3 3/4 inch high, top 5 1/4 inch x 3 1/4 inch, base, 6 1/2 inch x 4 1/2 inch.
The cigarette box was made for the donor (J.W. Callow) by one of the internees at Knockaloe Camp, when he was a member of the Camp staff.
