Iron Ball

Description: An iron ball, rusted, not perfectly spherical. Found among rubbish on the floor of the Smelt House at Derbyhaven, on July 15th 1961.

The Smelt House building dates from 1711, when it was erected by John Murrey as a warehouse and smelting-hearth in connection with the lead-mining industry. Some time in the early 19th century the building had been converted for agricultural use and the building was finally demolished inthe early 1960s. (Information from John Murrey’s Smelt-House by J.R.
