St Michael's Church, Fort Island

Date made: 1895

Description: “After an excellent dinner…we set off with a fine lad about fifteen years old who was going to light the little beacon on the watch tower of St Michaels Isle; a duty he had to perform every night during the herring fishery.” (Illustrated account of Mrs Emma Cram's 1842 visit to the Isle of Man, MS 13029)

The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
