Description: “At this [market] cross, centuries ago, the people congregated; here bargains were made, and contracts entered in to, barter in all shapes went busily on. Now [there is] no crowd; no pilgrim; no trafficker or barterer; the day dream of contemplation is alone broken by the scream of the seabird, the laugh of the village child, or the tinkle of the church bell as it calls to the house of prayer..” (Dr Robert Paterson, Manx Antiquities, 1863, M 02321)
The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
